The Client

Founded in 2011, our client are a high-performance tuning workshop for sports cars based in Warrington, Cheshire. Occupying their current premise since 2021, they have clients from across the country looking to improve their cars performance including engine building and chassis tuning.

The Challenge

Looking to see if they could reduce their business rates, our client assigned RVA Surveyors to undertake an in-depth inspection. An expert surveyor was sent to review the property and see if any evidence could be collected to build a case.

Once completed, our surveyor found that there were no grounds to continue through a Check Challenge Appeal case for the 2023 rating list. So, to see if any other savings could be made, the client’s case was passed to the RVA Audit Team who conducted a forensic review to find if the client would be eligible for reliefs.

The Solution

Before the Audit Team did their review, our clients Rateable Value (RV) had increased by over £11,000 from the previous ratings list (2017-2023) compared to the current list, from £14,250 to £25,000. This meant that our client would be eligible for Supporting Small Business (SSB) Relief, applied to small businesses who receive a higher RV from the previous list over £600.

However, to be eligible for this relief, the client must have either received Small Business Rates Relief (SBRR) before or during the 2023 rating list, which they did not. So, the Audit Team worked directly with the local authority and applied for both reliefs on the client’s behalf.

The Outcome

After the completion of the forensic review, the submissions for both SBRR and SSB to the local authority were successful and applied to our client’s account, leading to a substantial saving of £14,083 in reliefs backdated to their occupation in May 2021.

Savings achieved: £14,083
