The Client

Based in County Durham in the North East of England, our client are specialist upholstery experts in leather cleaning, wood repair, antique furniture restoration, and bespoke creations including headboards, restaurant seating and more.

Established in 2007 and with over 100 years of combined experience, our client is well respected within the upholstery industry and trusted by thousands across the North East.

The Challenge

To ensure their liabilities are correct before entering the 2026 revaluation, our client asked RVA Surveyors to complete an in-depth inspection of the property. After an expert surveyor reviewed their findings, there were no grounds to proceed through the Check Challenge Appeal Process.

However, as part of RVA’s Surveyors services a Forensic Review is also conducted by our in-house Audit Team to find any additional savings. It was during their review that our client was found to be eligible for Retail, Hospitality, and Leisure (RHL) Relief.

The Solution

For businesses to receive RHL Relief evidence must be provided and sent to the client’s local authority (LA). Across England local authorities can require different evidence for claims towards reliefs, with our client’s LA requiring evidence to include photographic evidence and invoices provided by the client indicating the presence of customers visiting the property.

Though this evidence was provided, our Audit Team were also able to use online reviews from customers which state their visit to the property, and information on the website for customers to find and visit their branches to further substantiate the client’s eligibility.

The Outcome

After the evidence had been sent, the local authority granted our client RHL Relief backdated to the start of the 2023 rating list, saving our clients over £19,905 in liabilities.

And now that our client has been granted RHL Relief during the current rating list, the RHL Multiplier will be automatically applied allowing them to receive further reductions through the 2026 rating list.
