The Client
Taking occupation of their current location in 2017 on the outskirts of Northampton, our client is a successful car sales showroom retailing around 800 used cars and commercial vehicles including Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes, Ford and more.
The Challenge
To find out if they could reduce their business rates, the client assigned RVA Surveyors to inspect the property for any potential reductions in liabilities. Once an in-depth inspection had been completed, the expert surveyor found no grounds to proceed through Check Challenge Appeal.
However, to ensure that all grounds for savings had been covered, the Audit Team at RVA Surveyors took over to conduct a forensic review and see if any reliefs could be applied.
The Solution
To do this, the team worked closely with the local authority to find reliefs that could be applied to the client’s property and lead to further reductions in liabilities. And it was during their inspection that the Audit Team found our client was eligible for Retail Relief dating back to the beginning of the current 2023 rating list.
The application of Retail Relief on behalf of the client would ensure they receive up to 40% support on their business rates liabilities; and with the discontinuation of Retail, Leisure and Hospitality (RHL) Relief in the new rating list from 1st April 2026, this relief will reduce their future liabilities and the burden of rising costs even further.
The Outcome
Not only was the application successful, but it is one of the largest savings through Retail Relief at RVA Surveyors with the client receiving over £67,000! Receiving Retail Relief will offer our client substantial support as they enter the 2026 Rating List, while also securing their historic, current and future liabilities.
